Question: when releasing songs, after songs (singles but that includes the previous ones), do you have an art work per single? (Per release), or do you keep the same artwork until you’re done with the album?
This is awesome! Thanks! Should we use the same álbum art on every song released that will be part of the album?
Very useful insights! I have noticed that when artists use this technique the full album release sometimes seems to be quite mediocre since the best songs have already been previously released as singles and the other new album songs are less interesting or feel like filler songs. For me personally this was the case with the latest album releases by John Mayer and Polyphia (huge fan of both), which while very successful releases, did not feel as satisfying for long-time fans such as myself, since by the time the album was released I already knew half of it (and the other new half was not better imo).
Is there a way to get around this? Maybe not releasing all your best songs as singles but also keeping some gems for the album? I would love to hear your take on this!
Wouldn't it unsave the songs from users' libraries if you're deleting the song and reuploading every release cycle?
I really love your conent! I am a jazz artist and don‘t know yet, how everything works out for my genre, but I will sure try and let u know about it. Thanks, Jesse 👍
Does the original track delete off of tik tok and Instagram ?
should i title the incomplete releases the same title as the album when it’s finished or call it a variety of the album title until the final tracks are added and title it the official title?
I have a question and an idea that I've been thinking about for some time. I don't like the waterfall method mainly because all my songs will have to have the same album art and because of this, the uniqueness of the song would be gone. So I was thinking, what if we release the 1st single and when we release another single we release that 2nd single alone, and make another release consisting of song 1 and song 2 and keep going with this until the album is done. I would remove the release consisting to track 1 & 2 when track 3 is released and then release a mix of track 1, 2 & 3. Any thoughts on this?? Will this get me the same benefits as the waterfall method??

Just finished the 2022 playlist and I am seriously considering the waterfall method because I realized that one of the six songs does not warrant being a single. I also like how it makes your discography extremely clean with one collection as a central space. But do you find it works more with a larger number of singles compared to six? In the video you mentioned your experience with people doing it utilizing various numbers, but I just wanted to confirm.
Been watching semi-daily for a week or two now and love your content. Just visited your site and read your bio. Stellar career. This is useless for biz/marketing but I would love to watch videos of stories from working for/with the bands mentioned in your profile.
Is that the same strategy for EPs?
thanks for this video Jesse!! great info and thoughts from you, really appreciate it. Though I'm interested to know your thoughts on promoting the singles to press – blogs, podcasts, radio etc. Would you promote each single individually, or send a presser with all songs and a private link. Don't want to overwhelm them of course.
Can you tell me some artist manager message board you use? Would love to check em out, love you’ve videos !
Some practical examples or step-by-step how-to details would be great. Also, FYI the waterfall method has been around for a really long time in creative agencies and probably a lot of other places. I'm a UX Designer, at my former job waterfall looked like: Kick off, Discovery/Research, Strategy, Design, Development, QA, Release, Maintenance. In more tech advanced companies and my current job, waterfall methods have been replaced by Agile methodologies which is a little more complicated to explain, but in essence, the ideal and goal are to get all of those previously mentioned "steps" to occur at the same time by focusing on smaller pieces of work and iterating constantly. Just thought I'd share some jargon insight. I'm a former metal musician transitioning into electronic music and just getting started on that front. Zero fans/listeners, one song on Spotify that I put up as a test to see how things work. Thanks for the content, hoping to put a lot of your strategies into play when my album is ready for release. The writing phase is done so getting close!
I've been binge watching your vids like cookie monster on a late night Oreo cookie bender! Our band Ashira is releasing our first single on the 10th of June. I'm taking mad notes while watching all your "Music Nerd" episodes (your words not mine 🙂 I'm going to buy your "Get More Fans" book, Do you cover a lot of the same concepts in that book as compared to your Youtube Videos? Thanks again, Man
Just keep posting and I'll keep watching
I have been doing this unintentionally for awhile now so thank you for validating me and making me conscious of it haha
OK I hope this is my last question man! Using the waterfall method, let's say you have a 9 track album, can you do 3-4 weeks ahead to help get on a playlist, but cascade your submissions every week? So like first week of April, you have your first track, but second week you have your next one? Or do you have to only have one submission going at a time?
Man this is great. You got a lot of valuable content here. My only question is that I am doing a record of all covers and releasing to distrokid, so I definitely want an album setup in addition to the singles waterfall. If I use your method, won't there be an album with the tracks and then the singles as tracks themselves? Meaning I'll be posting every track twice? Meaning I gotta pay for the rights twice, even though that's not necessary?
Hey Jesse, love your content. I'm probably a full 1% of your total views with how many I've watched and rewatched, lol. I'm interested in applying this approach (along with your release schedule, trimmed to 5 weeks) to my releases starting in late January, but I have some reservations. Could we walk through this together?
12/30: Upload track 1 to be released 1/26, giving 4 weeks to maximize the chance of getting picked up by a spotify editorial
1/26: Track releases & album art youtube upload, begin promo cycle
2/2: This is when I was planning on uploading track 2, to be released 3/2. In the waterfall method, would I be removing the previous track as well when it's only been out for a week or so? Or would I upload the 2-track album at this point, and then upon release I'd take down the first track? Or would uploading the 2-track album with the ISRC code in the first track make it automatically replace the first one upon release?
Hope this isn't too annoying of a question, I look forward to your response!
Best,
Atlas
Great video!
how to publish a VA in this way??
Hey Jessie great video as always man. I wanted to see if I could get your opinion on my release plan ? I'm thinking releasing a song a week (48 songs) in 2021. Album art and videos for each, but I dont sing so no lyric vids… and my shit computer cant handle complex video edits. Playalong vids are the best I can do rn. So I'm thinking right now quantity is my best bet.
I plan on putting out the 2 versions of each song, one with my melody and lead, and the other as a backing track style, with the chords on the album art so i can share it and encourage people to play leads, sing stuff, whatever they want. advertise it as a collaborate effort because thats the goal!
any kind of point of view outside my own head would help a lot… would every other week be better?
Thanks!
You should make a discoed
Just wanted to say I’ve been following your content for about 3 months now. Our first release was on 8/1 & we are using the singles methods because of your videos. I just sent the waterfall method to our group chat! Hopefully they like it, cause I sure do
Genius! I saw an artist doing this and didn’t understand it. Applying this to my weekly release method. THANK YOU 👁🌊
Waterfall is a term used in project management. (If you're an IT nerd like me)
this is the FUTURE
Love this video! We are a smaller local band. I don’t think we are ready for an album, but I like this idea! We haven’t been releasing singles that are the ambient/interlude feel.
At what point would you say an artist is ready for the “traditional album”? For example 3-4 singles then an album?
For my band I feel like writing songs that are “single worthy” is the way, or maybe release 2 tracks at once if there is a song that is more experimental/goes into the next song.
Sorry for the wall of text!
