Spotify is toxic. Have you asked him about how insulting their payouts are, how they've negatively impacted the ability of artists to make a living, Daniel Ek's recent $600 million investment in the German tech startup Helsing, using Spotify money to fund weaponized AI drones and feed wars worldwide?
What about this situation (applicable for us)
We’re an AI R&B group… however, we’re not just a “prompt-and-dump” project.
All our songs are FULLY produced AND written by a human (Benstar). Suno only provides the vocals.
Our point being: there needs to be a distinction between AI "prompt-and-dump" versus creative usage of AI (like us) … Plus Benstar is also a primary artist listed in the songs …. So how are we labeled on Spotify?
Anyway, tomorrow is Bandcamp Friday.!! 💿
Spotify is not gonna make you a successful artist 😂
I typed in Spotify the name of a well know fake AI band ( shunned at a funeral )“ , and it did NOT flag it as AI, does Spotify protect some AI artists?
Something smells like happy talk. Spotify is a black hole.
they give generic and useless answer to any question, i have doubt that in the chat they real people
I been releasing music for years and be writing great pitches and they still look past my music it's so hard to get on these playlists if you don't got a label or big money or know somebody who knows somebody than it's hard for a fully independent artist!!!
singers enhance their voice LIVE on stage. so some vocal manipulation should be allowed without being considered AI. my opinion.
I've pitched 125x and rejected 125x. I know not all my music is great but I have some very good work I have released that should have been placed. I know others that have pitched and the music isn't great, and they got on a playlist after 2 pitches. None of it makes sense to me. I keep pitching, but I've managed my expectations.
you should ask him about the recent algo shadowbanning. i've been hit hard and spotify wont tell me why. i use literally no AI and i don't spam uploads
why bother!? Spotify pays next to nothing to us anyway.
I loved this
Even without AI, rap and dance tracks have been using samples of well known songs and sometimes the original artist gets their share from this plagiarism but surely a lot gets missed. With AI, the potential for this is exponentially greater.
Question for Sam: Even though I had several songs in Discovery Mode throughout August, they received no Radio or Discover Weekly streams after August 10th. That’s extremely disappointing. It has been working very well for the past year, now it’s completely down.
Since the new verified badge was implemented, it feels like my music has been removed from Radio and Discover Weekly and is being treated in the same way as AI-generated music, which is really frustrating. I don’t have the badge yet, but my music is 100% human made.
I’m a small independent artist and put a lot of time, effort, and budget into growing my music. My monthly listeners dropped from around 35k to below 20k within just a few weeks, and I’m struggling to understand why.
I want to emphasize that I am a 100% human artist making 100% human-made music. I would really appreciate a clear explanation of what happened and why my music is no longer being recommended.
I’m honestly very disappointed with the way smaller independent artists are being supported through this. Thank you 🙏
24hrs, only 8k views for Spoti. Its OVER.
The YouTube algorithm brought me here—now it better bring people to my channel!
"Opinions on AI technology will evolve over time." Meaning, "we're not gonna stop it and we're hoping people will just get over it."
If artistes actually read the terms and conditions on Spotify there’d be about 50 people on there…
Companies like Spotify would be better if they were nationalized/regulated by the government.
The Spotify Algo's are the best, that's for sure. However, what Sam's is saying about the pitching process is hard to believe. Imagine, 100k Songs a day, probably 50% are being pitched…how many editors would you need to read all those pitches? It's algorithmic, I'm 100% convinced. Then, something else, he says "every artist uses the same route", NO, that's clearly not the case, and I don't understand why they're not transparent on that one. In every business connections matter – this is no different in the music industry. There are tier lists and pools, that's the most normal thing to handle that amount of submissions. Be fair – be transparent!
I have a question to Sam. What happens to the money they don't pay out to AI artists? Does it stay in the pot so it gets distributed to "real" artists? If yes, fine, if no, that's the reason why they won't ban AI.
the algorithm tips make sense but the real question is whether any of it actually moves the needle after you post. i started checking that through popHatch just to see if the changes were doing anything or if it was just noise
As a artist that uses A.I. to generate music. I personally,, a human being write ALL the Lyrics telling MY STORY which A.I. can't. I also pay 1.00 dollar more to get my A.I. Music distributed on Spotify through my distributer. 🥁🎤
Spotify's AI-Persona stance is damaging to unsigned acts and verges on major label cronyism. So they're going to hide artists using AI personas (but not artists using any other type of fictional persona) from discovery, UNLESS a user adds the artist themselves. How exactly is a user going to find that artist in the first place if they're hidden from discovery? This is a gift to major labels freaked out that unsigned artists using inexpensive AI could suddenly compete for streams and chart rank with the artists they've spent millions promoting. Anti-AI types will love it without realizing it further entrenches the major label stranglehold on distribution and visibility. So sure, label AI personas (a scarlet letter in todays landscape but whatever), but to remove them from the access to the algo is clearly punitive so Sam's talk of not wanting to dictate what tools artists can use is a lie when their policy dictates which artists have the visibility needed to grow. There are legitimate reasons for artists to use personas and that reasoning has existed well before gen AI (look at Deathklok, Gorillaz, Alvin and The Chipmunks, The Archies, Skeleton Staff, and so on). Spotify literally IS telling artists what tools they can use, not in music but to represent their image if they want anyone to be able to find them on the platform.
If A.i assisted artists cant get on editorial playlists then why not make editorial lists for ai assisted music? Surely there should be a lane of discovery available for them too and anyone who isnt interested can just avoid it.
Ko-T – Better Together is out now on all platforms 😛
"we're all in on video" no youre not. you dont offer video in europe, literally where your company is from.
I was thrilled to be featured on several editorial playlists when I started releasing music in 2022, including "LoFi Beats". My numbers grew significantly within just a few months, which eventually led me to sign a deal with EMG (Universal). Unfortunately, after that, my streams gradually declined.
Since then, I've continued to release music consistently, but I haven't been selected for any editorial playlists again. Over time, I became discouraged because I don't really understand what changed or how editorial selections are made. Eventually, I almost stopped pitching my releases because it felt like my submissions no longer had any chance of being considered.
Spotify won't tell you how to get on their algorithm cuz then it will not be organic.
What happened to.4
@musformation can you clarify the effect of a good playlist, ie I may have 1000 active listeners out of 2000 listeners, then I get on a huge playlist and I now have 1300 active listeners out of 50000 listneres. Am I better off as I have more active listeners or does the poor percentage penalise me?
I would have liked to know when is the best time to drop the music video for the single? The day of the release? Or 3 days after release? A week after release?
Also, I want to know is it better to pitch to editorial when you are at peak of your monthly listeners? Or better to pitch when your monthly listeners are rising every day? Or does that matter at all.
Also, is it better to pitch 4 weeks before release or 6 weeks? Everyone say 4 to 6 weeks but is there a perfect point?
Love your channel man! I’ve been dropping pro music videos with each single release ever 6 weeks since February and seeing improvements. I feel like something something big is going to happen soon! I’m getting a lot better at all of this too from just doing it. Thanks for the inspiration and technical talks
see how big his eyes keep getting ?? lol
People really need to get over the whole AI debate because it's pointless. AI is not going away and isn't going to be banned worldwide from anything. It's here and top level musicians and producers use it with far more success than many of those who complain endlessly. So, stop already. Listening to nonsensical rants from people who have no idea what they're talking about with opinions based on faulty information about AI capabilities and uses has become extremely annoying. Do what you do and stop worrying about what other people do.
Forget spotify and the algorithm! It's a bad business model for indie music sales!
So basically if you're using spotify etc only to get noticed and gain new listeners/ followers, you've already lost.
Running ads everyday had an 84% save rate and over 3000 streams with 2 weeks and not a single algo hit
Musicians are leaving Spotify. Maybe you should too (If you care about musicians).
Main message from this: So what he is saying about the Spotify algorithm is that you are STILL responsible for bringing the ears to the platform and the more ears you bring, then Spotify notices and maybe starts pushing it once you have 10K listeners. He literally said Spotify is not a discovery mechanism. This is absolutely useless information for Indie artists trying to build an audience. You cannot build an audience on Spotify unless you bring them there.
So Sam must be on a world tour on YouTube. This is the third appearance of seeing on an influencers page.
ALL THAT TIME THEY SPENT FW AI TO MAKE SOME BS THEY COULD HAVE LEARNED HOW TO ACTUALLY MAKE A SONG
Spotify hates artists and we don't hate them back enough, I don't know why you're sucking up to this guy's bootyhole. But anyway, I shall listen.
Jesse you're the best man. I'm pretty sure my music would not have reached anyone without your help.
Man this is great info I just wish I had access to uploading music videos on Spotify – I’ve emailed them a bunch of times and no response lol but I know it would really help me build my audience
I pitch to Spotify 'anyway' even if I have never been picked once. My gripe with it vs. other services is you have no idea using the Spotify Artists portal if anyone has seen your pitch, let alone heard your music. I don't mind a rejection, but at least have some data showing "Your pitch was read, your track was listened to at 'timestamp' for X seconds" instead of crossing your fingers and hoping for the impossible.
The dude is so hard to listen to. He can barely talk
DO NOT call them "AI Musicians" for fks sake.
off topic but u have the best most important music marketing info and i’ve gotten a few songs viral before. i find you’re the only channel that actually stays up to date on gen z music
