I discuss the growing discussion of industry plants and why everyone discussing it has it all wrong. I break down:
► What is an industry plant?
► Why the labels and rich parents can’t actually plant people into the music business.
► Why manufactured virality is a myth yet the extremely online think it happens all the time.
► Artists are often given a fake DIY origin story but that has been going on for decades.
►Why the industry plant rumors about Billie Eilish, Clairo, The 1975 and Charli XCX are dumb.
► Why I think an artist coming up organically and building a fanbase is sometimes more worthy of praise than those who get popular through a Tik Tok dance.
► What rich parents can buy as opposed to what they can’t

"achieve virility" 😳
Where'd you get the Globalist Cuck hat?? it's all I want for christmas
Being related to someone doesn't mean anything. My Grandma sang backup for Esqurita and Little Richard and my aunt sang the "baby baby do it to me rock me" on the remix of Rock Me Amadues….all that ever got me was being in the chorus of Kidz Bop 3. I mean it's still a Gold record tho…
Conspiracy theorists are gullible af. All of them.
Highly recommend reacting to Progresss. He does a lot of thorough research of on “industry plants”.
I think people were mad because how things were orchestrated and they rather you think it was all natural. Gen z doesn’t like that. Also propaganda in music is huge. Am I crazy? No
the Alex Jones impression was on point lol
I didn't even know Kat von D was making music lmao
Finally someone said it. This is capitalism. Music is a business. It’s not a charity. If you were a millionaire who had massive occupation opportunities would you just randomly give these jobs to random nobodies?
I think most people use the term 'industry plant' to insult artists that came out of nowhere, whose career is largely run by a record label, or at least, appears to be.
Look at these young artists like Kid Laroi or Iann Dior — people who often have a team of writers and producers to help their songs be as viable hits as possible.
I feel the examples you used are lacking — Kat Von D?
Think of an artist being scooped up by a label early in their development and sped to success. I'm not saying its a bad thing. But this is what people mean.
They aren't all tinfoil hat wearing nutters to suspect some of these artists of this.
I do agree that its easy to complain when you see what looks like a fast-tracked path to success and feel frustrated by it when you're in the trenches. That's life.
You should make a video on the the idea that artist put subliminal messages in songs what do you think about that subject
You’re missing the point. Being a music industry plant doesn’t guarantee success. It’s just a matter of being put in a position easier than the average aspiring artist. Its a seed not a flower.
What about the type/kind of music the signers make them play/sing? What this guy said sounds like all facts to me but forgot to include the only reason why they "plant" them at all.
I was one of maybe 300 people that helped popularize this term on a forum over 10 years ago and I regret it lol, I was a 15 year old though.
It started from my memory because people were convinced A$AP Rocky was trying to get A$AP Ferg popular and people thought he wasn't very good. It was always a conspiracy type thing driven by jealous teens. Great video.
Edit: Also nice shirt 🙂
😂the Alex Jones look up him dancing to miss new booty
I heard that when Billie Eilishs record company were planning her image, some of them argued "Well she's an industry plant. So we should just dye her hair green."🤔
Thank you for clarifying these things for people!!
Adams Johns 😂, my favorite video yet – I feel it cancels the fear of being "an industry plant" – It takes talent and… talent.. is. not. money.
I was offended by some the points made in this video but I also learned alot. This comes from my innate need to defend my beliefs but also, I know when to be quiet and listen. that's why this was pinned to the top of the comments.
I think the best way of going about it is saying that an already very talented artist gets approached by an entity that believes in them, regardless of the notoriety of their following or listener base. People tend to act like “Industry plants” are names picked out of a hat only because they’d like the same thing to happen for them. Its sad but true.
Sure it might not be the best way to go about establishing yourself early in the industry, but its a better “start” than most.
If you believe in your craft and love the music, just keep doing it. You will seek opportunity naturally.
You nailed it on this one, Jesse. You would think that common sense would make people realize if an artist was planted but had little talent, that artist would simply be a liability to the record company.
The only way this game would work would be if the artist was continually subsidized by rich parents, as no record or management company would carry them at at a loss.
But even pouring money into advertising and promotion will not have any effect if the product (artist) is not desirable to the audience.
Thanks for dispelling this myth, and diving deeper into the elements of this business that many marketing agencies only scratch the surface on.
hahaha the alex jones imitation is the best thing !!!!!
Thanks man, again you are coming with common sense in a world of full of BS. And great character work with your tin foil hat my dude. Didn't know you had that range.
Some paths are easier. Some paths are harder. No complaining. Just figure it out. Especially if you claim you want it as bad as you want it. You will figure it out.
The fake indie label dates back to at least late 80’s with appetite for destruction.
Love the sarcasm of this video. Almost passed on it because the premise seems self evident if you do just a little research or live in a industry city that plants aren’t possible.
Great video.
I’m in the camp of people who believes the notion “industry plant” is just an overused excuse to hate a popular artist.
I don't know about "plants" but there are certainly no lack of manufactured music stars particularly in the pop genre.
It's not as if some teenager pulled themself up by their bootstraps and learned how to compose and record and market music so effectively as to become a mega pop star before even graduating highschool.
Clearly such a person is merely the face of a coordinated effort involving many people who have spent years in the industry.
As for the radio stations there is a pitiful amount of diversity in their content. All across the USA they seem to have the same playlists. I've heard tons of great music on the internet that never saw any playtime whatsoever by the radio stations.
They don't appear to be very organic but just get some deals to play the same shit over and over. If they are doing this to try to keep people listening then they fail hard in my case because I turn on the radio sometimes with years in between instances yet still find the music they play to be overplayed. There is so much variety out there but they just stick to a narrow list which sucks.
“No water or sunlight, and then it died..” 🤣🤣🐐🐐🙌🏽🙌🏽
Very complicated topic. In my career I'd say I've seen DEF more than 1/3rd that fail. But there is something to be said when someone at a major label calls up Allie Hagendorf to ask for a favor. Those palm grease deals do happen, but it doesn't mean the artist will stick, even if they get heavily playlisted…
As a kid growing up I saw so many child stars from Nickelodeon and Disney try to transition to music and fail miserably. They had built in fan bases and the biggest corporations in the world behind them but it still failed so often. Some broke through like Miley or Ariana Grande, but they’re also the ones with legitimate talent. Seeing that growing up, I’ve always thought the whole industry plant conspiracy was dumb as hell.
the alex jones impression was next level 😂
No surprise this all stems from Twitter
f a c t s
although..Olivia..Ariana..Zendaya..
Miley..Justin..Britney..Christina..
some are planted thru Disney & Nick
I knew Philly had a scene, but I didn`t know there was a music business scene there too
I don't even need to watch the video to know the whole industry plant thing is stupid…i'ma watch the video tho!
OH MY GOD YOUR ALEX JONES IS PERFECT 😂

That Alex Jones impression is spot on lmaooo
I will stand on my point when I say people who talk a lot about autotune and industry plants don't have any idea about what their talking about.
