Keyword research is the process of finding keywords that people are searching for in search engines.
The general process can be divided into two major steps.
Step 1 is to generate keyword ideas. And step 2 is to validate whether those keywords are worth going after.
This lesson is mostly about step 1: generating keyword ideas for your website. To do that, you need a keyword research tool.
Keyword research tools show you information on keywords like their search volume, keyword difficulty scores and other SEO metrics. Plus, they should help you discover potential topics worth going after.
How do you use keyword research tools to come up with ideas that’ll keep you busy for years? You’ll learn how to do that in this video.

WOW JUST WOW 👌👌👌👌
The latest Keywords Explorer has "Matching Terms" and "Related Terms" instead of "Phrase Match" (shown in the video).
I see that "Terms Match" and "Phrase Match" are now sub-sets of "Matching Terms".
If you were recording this tutorial today, would you recommend we use Terms Match (which is what the report defaults to) or click through to Phrase Match?
I understand the logistical difference between the two, and I also understand that the answer might depend on one's specific case.
However as a novice, I ask again… what would be your general direction if you were recording the tutorial with the latest version of the Keywords Explorer?
I do not have phrase match, I have matching terms, related terms, are i doing something wrong?
Hi Sam, as you said in the end of last video that we would revisit the example of Golf bags where there are mixed results in SERP. I also saw this complete video but its not discussed in this one as well. Please let me know if we should still consider this keyword's intent as Commercial and write blog post on that? Or we should consider its intent as Transactional and needs to create Ecommerce category page on it?
Hey Sam
The trial version and the premium version has so much difference , the free version hardly as any detail with comparison to the premumim one
please help us
If 300 can be taken up as an ideal no. for search demand, what should be the ideal minimum no. for traffic volume ?
seriously so amazing this tool is and the way you explain is just wow. Loved It
is there any free tools caus now i can't buy a paid tools?
Do you have a video on how to take a keyword you find and turn it into a writing brief or outline?
This step is really important and I’m not finding much learn about this next step in the process. Thank you.
what is the ideal number of keywords that should be entered into our website? is there any limit?
I've spent hundreds, if not thousands, on copywriting courses and academies and I learned maybe a quarter of what I am learning here. Thank you so much!

How do plural keywords and adding an article to the keywords affect SEO? Is there a video on that?
GOOD 👍
Thanks for video ❤🎉
Im 3 years late, but I wanted to ask just in case I can get a response. I understand the research process for the keywords and everything. I just would like to know how to actually implement them into a website?
This video was made a few years ago. This is 2024 so my question is are all these features in Keywords Explorer available in the Starter Package or the Lite Package? Thanks
You are a great teacher Sam
Why choose above 300 searchs/month when there are many high-converting commercial intent products with 10 volume?
Great content!
Finding the right keywords has always been a challenge for me, but your method made it feel a lot more manageable. Thanks for the clear and actionable advice!
Thanks for insights.
can you please explain why we cannot match search intent of customer want to shop while an affiliate page also sell like e commerce page?

“…to keep you busy for years.” 😂
In an older video you claimed you were ranked #1 for the term 'SEO Checklist". I checked Google and you are ranked a lowly 8th. How can users take these videos seriously?
at 4:52: Where comes the business potential of 3 from? And which is max and min of business potential and what does each value mean?
This video really breaks down keyword research in an accessible way, and the Ahrefs tool tips are super practical. Definitely going to give these strategies a try!

Hi ahrefs, I really love your videos and I wanted to ask if you have any recommendations for SEM as well?
Seems like i wont be able to follow the course much longer, since all things learned will be from a proffesional, paid tool now.
I know you have those small, free versions, but they dont track any of the things shown and taught in the video anymore.
Excuse me for this silly question. Are we selecting these keywords as topics on which we would want to write or make content around, after we've chosen the relevant ones? What if I already have a topic in my mind I want to make content on(write a blog on, say, Mental health) and write multiple blogs on the same topic?
Great videos btw, learning a lot. Thanks.
02:47 – this section’s breakdown of long-tail versus short-tail keyword impact highlights what we’ve seen in real Ahrefs tests: targeting specific intent terms consistently drives higher CTR and sustained rankings over generic head terms. At Grow More Gaze we’ve documented similar patterns across niche sites, where refining topic clusters around intent improved organic traffic within 60 days. #SEO #KeywordResearch
@ahrefs what am asking is that after all this am done with Seo on my website I believe
03:42 The explanation around prioritizing intent over volume stood out. We ran a small content refresh test within the Grow More Gaze team and noticed pages targeting clearer search intent delivered more qualified traffic than broader keywords. That segment reflects what we've observed in practice when measuring engagement quality rather than raw visits. #SEO
