  1. Wow, I've really been enjoying your videos. I released an EP 2 years ago and learned the hard way that paying a pr guy, in my case, just meant getting tagged on random IG accounts with no real interaction. All the press I got came from me being resourceful, calling friends, cold calling reporters, newspapers, etc. I definitely appreciate all this info, Jesse! I don have a question for anyone reading this: I am starting to write music with lyrics (used to play jazz) and have a hard time defining my genre. I havent started releasing my music, so how would I go about asking people what they think I sound like if I have no music out yet. Should I start with friends and family perhaps? And maybe later, once music is released, ask strangers on the webs to describe my music? Thanks!

  2. Thanks for this video, at least it gives me a start…As my music is influenced by many different styles, I have had a really hard time trying to figure out where it "fits": in…even though there may be a common denominator, my music varies in combinations of different styles per song. …My friends all have different opinions on what the music sounds like and none of them are remotely the same lol…

  3. Opposite problem: I know exactly who and what I sound like but most other people don't.

The only person who has picked it so far, took about 3 weeks to make the comparison with Editors, which, to be fair was pretty spot-on.

The industry people I've spoken with are befuddled and the nearest comparison was Antony and the Johnsons. At which I lol'd.
…Merely because I can sing, and in a low register.
It shows the kind of bubble they live in.

So the real problem is getting into other people's heads, finding out how wrong they are and then appealing to that.

    Most people aren't musicologists.

I do like the Community slant to this though. Because Genre is a made-up story that helps to form a group identity. It doesn't exist outside of the community context. Pretending that it has any objective reality is a false premise.

We, as artists, are trying to discover an isolated tribe in the digital wilderness: as missionaries for our sound.

  4. @Musformation Thanks Jesse! Very helpful tips as usual and production quality is 💯 Beyond telling me to focus my music making on one genre, what would you advise for someone who just can't stick to one lane and does hiphop, synthpop, alternative rock?

  5. Hi Jesse,
Thank you so much for this video. I just got some feedback on reddit and it was really interesting as to my micro genres!! Now I have a clue! You are helping us indie artists out who are willing to hussle for it but have NO CLUE about marketing whatsover! What an eye opener. Thanks for the really practical down to earth concrete steps because that's what we need the most!

  6. Thank u very much Jesse for this info!!
Btw i would love if anyone can help me with this exercise, listen to my music and tell me their opinion about the genre or sub-genre, i will appreciate your opinion 😀 I am from Mexico and come and go to LA (for acting purposes) although for me has been difficult to find my people.

  7. Thanks for making these videos, helps alot. I'm an indie artist from Oslo. Your how to write a pitch video made me write one which got my last single featured on a Spotify editorial playlist here in Norway. Amazing. Anyhow. I've been making music for a while now, and I still wonder sometimes what I sound like. If someone here in the comment section wants to give it a listen on spotify and let me know what you think I'd be super happy. Let me know! Thank you!!

  8. Man your videos are probably one of the biggest external factors to my motivation. Realizing so many things I was doing unconsciously. Your channel is a god send for those who are willing to listen and think critically. I appreciate your playlists heavy
