Local keyword research is the first and arguably the most crucial step of local SEO. 88% of people who do a local search on their smartphone usually visit a related store within a week.
With this step-by-step tutorial, your local business can rank for the right keywords and drive targeted local traffic to your website, which will send you more customers.
As a first step, jot down a list of all services you offer. Don’t skip this brainstorming stage because you’ll want to ensure that your website is discoverable for all your services.
Want to learn how to expand your list? Watch the video.
The second step is to check for local intent.
Local intent refers to queries where Google assumes the user is looking for a local result. The easiest way to understand local intent is to check SERPs for map packs and local organic listings.
Watch the video to learn how to do it.
The next step is to check for local search volumes.
Most keyword research tools provide country-specific data, so it may be difficult to find local search volumes. While Google Keyword Planner can provide city-specific volumes, you’ll often see broad search volume ranges, which aren’t helpful for local keyword research.
This video will expand on how to overcome this obstacle when doing keyword research.
The next step is to group keywords by page.
Here, we need to do two things:
► find out which services will need a dedicated page
► get a general idea of the content type and format to have the best chance at ranking.
Watch the video to learn how to do it.
The next step is to look for things to mention on your pages.
Many local companies go for keyword stuffing. It’s the wrong approach because it doesn’t help visitors understand if your company can solve their problem. Instead, go for relevant “things to mention” in your copy that visitors will actually want to read.
Want to learn how these things are helpful for your business and how to find them? Watch the video.

Hello Helen? How are you??
The question is irrelevant to this post but relevant to SEO.
Once i read about topic clusters on ur blog or utube,
we write a detailed content and add some subtopics in this content, then discuss those sub topics in a separate blog post. And inter link to each other by internal link.
I want to ask should we try to rank those subtopic's KW on those separate blog post, or should we try to rank those suptopic's KWs on that detailed content???
For more clarification:
If i want to get a guest post, then using the suptopic's KW as an anchor, which page link should i use behind that anchor?
A detailed content page link
Or
The page on which only that Kws is discussed in separately??

Thanks for sharing,Ahrefs!A great informative videos!
Good video, but I still have some questions
I’m interested to know why you didn’t mention keyword difficulty?
Also, I’m not sure what is meant by using search volume to prioritise creating and ranking these pages. Could you give an example?
Finally, after we have our full list of services, what about other versions of keywords that map to the same service? Do we ignore these when writing our content? For example “plumber” vs “plumbing service”
Thanks 😊
Your approach to local keyword research is super practical and easy to follow.
Thnk u for wasting my time
Brother why u guys skip the main points and why u guys not showing the exact process we know these things what u tell us in this video
But it will be out of the world that u can do these steps practically
Thank u for wasting my time

Your tool is great, but please add a feature to identify keyword intent.
I dissagree with the statement that what happens in 1 city is likely to follow on other cities.
Demand for service based businesses is night and day when you compare metro vs normal cities. Also each city has super diffrent search volumes.
Movers – when searches from LA has way more search volume compared to Movers, when you run the search from Dallas.
You can run some simple math and assume that you can take the search volume for "movers la" – compare this to the population, do the same with "movers dallas" and you can get 2 coefficients to tell you how much does 1 grow with population but this is also not too great of an approach!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU START LOOKING INTO SOMETHING THAT GIVES US A CORRECT ( near correct) search volume for local keywords.
Local SEO can be tricky when you're just starting out. You might want to try leadsapp for organizing your local leads and tracking which keywords bring in visits. It helped me keep everything clear and focused on what actually drives customers.
03:42 The explanation about validating assumptions before scaling stood out. We ran a similar workflow review at Grow More Gaze and found that documenting one measurable checkpoint before expanding execution reduced wasted effort and made later optimization far more reliable. It’s a practical reminder that disciplined testing usually outperforms faster execution. #SEO #ContentStrategy
