How many messages did Google send about unnatural links?

At a search conference, someone said that earlier this year, Google sent out 700K warnings to websites about shady links. True? Not true?

  1. When Google sends these kinds of messages, it shouldn't really bother us who's doing pure white hat SEO. If messages like these are sent to us because of people doing negative SEO, it's not like we can't do anything about it… That's why the disavow tool is there. You just gotta make sure that you aren't spamming and you should be squared away.

  2. … And in reality, despite that 'pied-piper' power, a lot of their reasoning is just…

What gets me is they put all their stuff in the results now (Maps, Local, Shop, AdWords, etc to undo all that SEO work.

  3. Peter – it's a free world so do what you gotta do (just don't hurt anybody)! Google plays a tune and the rest of the world does their dance !! If you wanna be part of the party you need to join in, like it or lump it!

Google's tune has caused trillions of extra man-hours (and a whole SEO industry) by tweaking with keywords, links and titles just so we are all in their chorus. I hate the extra work but they have the POWER to make or break us !!!

  4. I like the way he refers to "anybody can look at a site and tell blah blah blah". Laughable! As if anyone at Google makes decisions about a site's SEO based on what it looks like or actual content! Whatevah…. It bases their decision on crap like if the incoming links have a variety of anchor-text words. Unfortunately, quality websites without the right anchor-text variety get thrown under the bus. 🙁

  5. This guy and his BULLSHIT ALGORITHMS ! I have a site that is packed with content about car detailing and I got a shitty " unnatural link message " and my site has disappeared into the weeds. So what if I was posting in forums, so what if I was posting on blogs, or Twitter, or Facebook, or Linked in or Squidoo using the same keywords. That's what my business targets " car detailing " He has the Hyde to wear that stupid shirt. DICKHEAD ! I hope Google crashes when Bing takes over you dumb fucker

  6. Matt, quick question, for the unnatural link building messages, is it possible that you guys would consider reporting "bad links" before taking a penalty? I had a political candidate client with a good-standing website (her site was being publish on newspapers and official party-headquarter sites, and yet it was de-indexed by Google after what I suspect is negative SEO from her political adversary (I found thousands of "bad links" from all kinds of ugly sites appear out of nowhere).

  7. Also I created a site a month ago and many other blogs wrote articles about it as they like it, I never paid any review or links, the result was that google pushed me out of top 100 for all my main terms. I'm seriously mad cuz I feel stupid doing the right things and seeing spammers ahead of me!!!

  8. Honestly most of the time I do reach first page with white hat even if it takes forever. If the ranking factor missing is duration and bounce rate, well how the hell those site with one page and ads can have a low bounce rate?!?google "adult scooter" you will find a .info domain that has0links and1page content. or "book of ra" in the italian google and check the backlinks of the first couple of results: all comments/guestbooks/foreign links. If google changed, it did in worse and not better.

  9. Matt I just don't understand why I keep seeing sites on first page that use black hat techniques and spammy links. You said you would give better results, well you guys are failing and I can show you many example. Or even sites with EMD ranking on first page with 0 links and 1 page content. Seriously disappointed!

  10. Why you are not checking out the payday loan industry in uk – all the first spots under payday loan and payday loans terms are occupied by blackhat spammers !

  11. I really don't think it is very funny the wearing of penguin and panda stuff. People have been drastically hurt and business destroyed by these updates. In many cases I have seen the webmaster doing nothing at all wrong with the websites from a algorithm perspective.
