  1. I don’t know man… I think I get what you’re saying but I think it’s super difficult to abstract and formulate these kind of rules. Like… I could imagine a song that is purely made from „superfluous“ parts… these kind of rules could be used for writing „super mainstream hit songs“, but even there these formulas fail.
I think you’re right in the sense that when producing a song, it’s a good rule of thumb to strip the song down to its essence, see what needs to be there and what not, and „kill your darlings“ …
I think it’s a matter of framing that bugs me here. Like… „rule for good song“ vs. „This could be a good idea“
Also I’d like to mention that this applys for producing. In the process of Songwriting you shouldn’t care for these kind of thoughts and just go and make whatever you want and absolutely be ready to make all kinds of superfluous stuff because it’s beautiful 😊

What are your thoughts on this?

  2. You definitely make a good point in this video, but there’s a fine line between superfluous and integral. Case in point, “Feel it Still” by Portugal. The Man. In listening to that track, there is a lot of sounds that could be considered superfluous but contribute brilliantly to the song as a whole. Thoughts?

  3. Hey Jesse, would be pretty cool to if you could make a video where you demonstrate how you decide whether the part/sound/anything else is adding or taking away from the track.

  4. One of the hardest lessons to learn. A big breakthrough for me was realising I already have enough ideas to finish my song, it doesn't need any others, just to develop my existing idea, often with simple changes in dynamics. I think the key thing is to be able to listen as a listener rather than a player, that small change in the idea which as a player feels like nothing is actually the difference between an idea and a complete song.

  5. Being in a band, sometimes this can be an interesting concept, especially for my genre of metalcore. While I understand the musicians wanting to showcase their raw ability, sometimes that just makes it kind of boring.
