I went to Berklee same time as Betty Who and I get how she feels but I also am tired of not having fans and working at Starbucks so I will continue to learn! Tiktok can't be why artists can't artist anymore. Just a different game.
i guess that's one of the downsides of being on a major label, you're basically a slave to their whims. they also control what you can say or do. what do you think would happened if she stood up against the fluent gender madness?
People thought the internet was dumb shit for kids too. Have fun getting left in the dust.
I get what you are saying. But I think what Halsey is trying to say it’s that her music is being delayed and there are better ways than to just make a viral tiktok in order for her songs to be released.I’m sure she wants to do the promotion work no matter how hard it is, but having your music restricted to be released when it’s the thing you need to promote doesn’t make sense.
I think one of the ways to keep the popularity going for an artist is to allow them to release their work, and for Halsey she has tons of fans who are waiting for her , so if they released it she would’ve still gotten a stable amount of feedback and popularity and there might even be on the news bc it’s her new song.
The realest and most helpful channel I've stumbled upon so far.
the Lesson is simple, don't sign Major label contracts. their model (and indeed reason for existence) is still based on pre-internet music sales. You don't need them any more.
Remember she would have signed that contract after the Massive hit she toplined for Chainsmokers. It would have been a big advance on the expectations that she can recreate that, and her music since will be 'under performing' from the label's pov like you said.
unfortunately she just wants to be an artist, but she signed up to the industrial process. Remember the music INDUSTRY is exactly that. It's got little to do with art.
She even got to work with her hero (and mine) Trent Reznor, but the fact is NiN records never really did more than 10th of her numbers, and certainly isn't trending on social media. It's not going to sell records.
If building yourself as a false idol for a brief moment of exposure on Tik Tok is how you make it, then there soon just not going to have any artists.
There's no "making it"
Its an objective fantasy
Stop allowing people to distribute their trashy crap and consider marketing for a person or team with something more than a song that results in a small piece of a cent per click, rather vest in ideas the support foundational logic and passionate longevity Wirth a promise to be true to what's good.
Soon your market will be allllll dry because its costs real MONEY to make proper music.
Tik Tok IS NOT the way bro
Hey!, love the work. From what you said, I think you might be interested in this channel 👉 #drjohnaking. I find him encouraging and insightful.
I always admire how you tell it like it is with no bs. Awesome video, as usual!
From my experience Tik Tok is toxic. It’s a shallow vacuous platform. I hate having to use it. As an indie artists I'm not after massive sales etc. But I can totally see why so many musicians don't like it. It's a shallow crappy app.
100% agreed.
She sold her soul and got a hospital bed. The music industry is a drain.
I’m getting way more views on TikTok than IG and I’m over 40. It’s actually pretty creative and fun.
hey just giving you a heads up about something: You might be aware of this already but I am reading your pink book on music production. In the middle of the book It says "If you are reading this you got this as a free download" however I paid for the book. Just letting you know about this. keep rocking it
I have heard that contrary to what was said in this video that the amount of time it takes to promote on Tiktok it's still large. You are expected to interact with others and keep producing and posting content. That doesn't sound any different when in 2019 I started promoting to the best of my ability and time (i.e. have a FT job) to get streams on Spotify. I burned out in about 6 months.
this is the pep talk i needed, thanks again Jesse 🤟🏻
Also I’m 31. Been grinding my ass off since I was 24. Hunger doesn’t die with age if you really want it 💕
I just started tackling TikTok about a month ago and been posting 1-4 times a day. It’s a golden opportunity for musicians. And yes in the beginning it might feel off brand or you might not know what to post. But you have to embrace the experimental phase when you first get started.
Solid perspective. Your point about staying youthful is the crux of all this, I think. I’m 33 myself and I totally understand the feeling of getting older and just not having as much energy as before. But to me that just means you go back to the drawing board and clarify your priorities. You have to allot your time and creative energy more strategically/efficiently. All of these huge artists make tons of money from brand partnerships, for example, but if you find you’re too tired to market your own music (the bread and butter of your career), then something else has to go, at least temporarily. You can do anything but you can’t do everything at once.
Well, isn't that PR? She's in discussion. Mission accomplished. I wouldn't be surprised if the label agreed to the story.
“Gringoizing” 🤣🤣👌🏽. Thanks for your books and videos. Have learned so much!!
Would love to see some Content on overcoming analysis paralysis.
U golden for providing this insight man
Hey! I really love your channel. So many great tips that have been sooooo helpful!
I’m wondering… have you noticed a change in instagrams algorithm lately? Cause all of a sudden I can’t seem to reach my followers like I used to just a couple of weeks ago. The engagement on posts and views on my story have suddenly dropped and I can’t figure out why??
I've bought two copies of your book and gained immeasurable value from your videos. Question, what other youtubers should I be following for music marketing? If it matters, we're an industrial rock/metal band. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO! 🙂
Notifications gang checking in
Rick Beato did a video on this the other day…and after watching this, I see my initial reaction to his is correct. He’s a genius when it comes to song construction and analysis, but completely clueless and out of touch when it comes to how the music industry works now
Thank you for posting this
"I deserve better" she sounds so entitled.
What if this whole thing was a marketing shenanigan and we all fell for it?
Here's a tactic Atlantic used to make that "ABCDEFU" song go viral on TikTok – https://www.tiktok.com/@danielswall/video/7050208352160435503
I appreciate the perspective shift around TikTok’s actually being less work artists have ever had to do. I agree but I don’t have anyone over my head yet telling me to do it either 😅 so it’s more fun (& a lil fumbly) for me as an independent artist. maybe it’s less pressure of making mistakes/cringe content 😂 ? And these artists maybe have a lil fear of that when they don’t have help to do the TikTok’s? Idk but you definitely present a thought provoking perspective.
Also “advanced aged” is fire 😭❤️🔥 I’m about to be 30 and low key feelin myself so this is going into the lexicon lol
it"s interesting to have the point of view of the label
Thanks for the video
Great insight Jesse, thank you!
She lost me with the "i deserve better comment"
