Waterfall Releases, Spotify Countdowns & Playlists CHANGED!?!?

Music Marketer Jesse Cannon addresses recent misinformation circulating on social media about the effectiveness of the “waterfall” music release strategy. A viral video claimed that re-releasing songs via waterfalls splits their popularity on Spotify, making the method obsolete. Jesse debunks this by citing expert insights and Spotify’s own data systems, explaining that while each release instance has a unique popularity score, Spotify still attributes streams correctly by ISRC code, maintaining a song’s momentum. He critiques the spread of unchecked information from individuals promoting their marketing courses and details when and how to best use waterfall releases, Spotify countdowns, and playlist links to optimize music promotion strategies. Jesse also provides practical advice for artists based on their release goals, listener behavior, and platform tools, emphasizing the importance of accurate strategies in helping artists grow and retain their fanbase.

  1. I was confused why he left it up as well after we all helped correct the record. He’s a nice guy, but I agree, spreading misinformation is dangerous. Thanks for making this.

  2. Im conflicted because Magic nothing has been a real beacon for artists like myself. Like unlike most he has really looked to help artists even without the course. I think it was a fair comment but i dunno why he left it up after finding out its not true.

  3. I follow magic nothing and when I saw the video he put i was instantly sceptical. Didn't see any of your interactions in the comments, but nice find my instincts were in the right direction.

  4. sorry to say Jesse, but The Velvet Sundown marketing strategy left all you dudes in the dust. ( and I love you all) BUT Until you really deal with that fact that VS blew all you guys out the water. (with their cheating strategy???) I hate to say it but it makes you guys obsolete. Do I wish this to be true ABSOLUTELY NOT!

  5. Thank You for the info along with showing me a book I never heard of. Honestly, do you have book recommendations for us or do you believe that the books they make in relevance to the industry itself are outdated?

  6. Hey Jesse, thanks so much for this video! I was just about to change my entire release strategy after seeing that Instagram video so I'm so glad I saw this first. Two quick questions:

    1) Do you think it's bad to use the same artwork for each release when waterfall releasing singles that eventually becomes an EP?

    2) Would you recommend taking down the initial singles once the EP is out?

I've heard that if someone adds your first single to their liked songs / a playlist etc then you remove that specific release of the track (e.g. take down single 1 when the full EP is available), that track will be removed from their playlists even though the song itself exists on Spotify with the same ISRC but contained under the EP now only.

Hope that makes sense and thanks again!

  7. Thanks for clearing this one up! I did question him on the reel myself. As someone with about 6m streams and 22k monthly I just did the first single from my new album back in July this raised about 20k streams and has a pop score of 26%. Single 2 (which is waterfalled with this one) completely tanked and ended up with 2%! This is why when I saw his reel, I thought he might be right! I've no idea why it failed so much though! ha ha

  8. Thanks for addressing this and for sharing my Instagram comment to this "expert" in your video. It really surprised me that he kept this up after so many of us gave him facts that contradicted his information. It is appreciated that you use your platform to correct this nonsense. 👍🎶

  9. see… this is a prime example of why you have integrity and good form. there’s so so soooo much noise out there. the key to gaining momentum is narrowing down the voices you listen to. Jesse… You’re a class act . We appreciate the F*CK out of you. 🙏🏼
