Great insider info! Appreciate it esp. just starting out 💯🙏
in december 2020 this guy had like 7k so in first year he tripled fanbase. S/o to jesse and the team for some actually solid content.
I love this video! SOOO many bands and artists need to hear this. I've seen people be such jerks at venues and wonder why they don't ever get booked again.
tl;dr: just be a chill person and make friends
Digging this info about the part of being a musician that isn't sitting behind a computer for hours pitching to playlists 😂Thanks man!
The point about being shy because you are worried the person will be a dick is really good. I've heard it before but the way you said really made it click and resonate. I am going to teach it to my students in my day job when I talk about networking in academia. I've always thought that academia was just 'being in a band' for non-musical nerds, but the way you and folks like Finn McKenty phrase it really hammers that home.
Being cool with the venue staff is a total no-brainer but it's amazing how many people in bands do not get this. There is such a low bar to success that you have to actually try to fail and yet so many manage to mess it up. It's especially important when you venue staff are being difficult, you don't know their jam, and people who see you being chill in difficult circumstances will remember that as a positive thing about you. When I played a show, I always made a point of talking to staff, giving a quick intro like "Hi, I'm WOE, from [band], let me know if there is anything can do to make the show easier for you, other wise I am ready to go and will stay out of the way until it's time to soundcheck/play". At one venue I played semi regularly, I told the sound guy (genuinely) that I was glad he was on the board that night as his shows always had the best sound. He looked genuinely taken back and thanked me, like he'd never been told that by any one, then I always had great sound and smooth gigs at that place.
Same goes for talking to the other bands, especially those from out of town. Yet so many times I saw the local bands in one corner trying to look tough*. Unless you're happy being the lords of the local empire, you need to start making those connections, but it never seems to happen. Then that one band comes along that figures it out and goes on to have some wider success and everyone else on the local scene is like "how did they do it?! must be rich parents and industry connections! Lets shun them forever."
*I was/am incapable of looking tough and am too much of a dorky nerd to not want to talk to other bands about gear and music.
alright! great.
Awesome advice as always! Thanks!
Network, network, network
Be nice, be nice, be nice
Be funny, be funny, be funny
I just started pounding the ground with my band, and I loved all the points you shared and look forward to adding them to our regime! I’ve been to many local shows, and I’ve never seen any band or it’s members doing these things. Even most of the bigger names on tour! It seems so common sense, but apparently it isn’t 😅
got my first nyc gig next month, this video couldn't have come at a better time
Wow, this video couldn’t have come at a better time as my band that formed last year has our first show next weekend. All of your videos have been very helpful in helping us get a better understanding of what we should be doing. Thanks Jesse.
Man, I had so many conflicts with my drummer because he was "too cool" to be nice to other artists and venue staff. I am so happy he has grown up since then and can at least stay and watch the other band play.
Great video and fantastic advice!
The email list is God. Absolutely 💯% agreed. It's helped us sell way more tickets and merch
This is sooooo true.
I like the video, but it's at 69 likes right now and I can't bring myself to mess that up
Definitely gonna start using the soundperson joke, that's great!
It’s not that 1 dude I’m the crowd’s fault that no one else showed up…
Thanks for the eye openers about live shows!
If people arent gonna come, you cant stop them.
Seriously though, you can sum up everything Jesse says here in three words"JUST BE PROFESSIONAL"
