Hey Jesse, just wanted to say just how authentic the stuff you are putting out there are.
As a music marketer who used facebook ads and felt like something wasn't working,
your focus on building connections with fans reshaped how i think about promotions. Can't wait to get your book!
I’m trying to understand the difference between releasing singles and bringing them together as an album and doing the waterfall method. Wouldn’t you lose you’re streams if you rerelease as an album at the end?
yes, a regular q&a from you would be excellent – i watch needledrop and Let's Argue is one of my favorite segments fantano does
Good answer on playing to a lyric video strength. Helps me feel less stressed on trying to make a conventional music video every time. Lyric explanations and fun live performances are my strength as well.
I know it may beneficial to give more than just song after song but if it's possible wouldn't it be better to put out 3-4 weeks while still putting out lyric videos and music videos every other week.
YES
Historians typically remember albums as singles end up in a vanilla ice pile if they lucky.
I appreciate the video. Great info.
We had received advice from a friend who was once in a decent sized signed band. We’re currently taking his advice for this release method and id love to hear your thoughts. First single was released through New Noise and was a lyric video. Next single is being released as a music video through Alt Press or Brooklyn Vegan. Then the EP drops on Spotify. He advised this saying it builds hype and draws people to listen to the full EP on Spotify. Typically we’d release the singles on Spotify and it feels weird not having them up until the EP drops. What’re your thoughts on this?
Definitely do more Q&A stuff please
I love your incredibly dense, no-bullshit approach to all of this. My one question is this: At the end of the year I’m planning on releasing a double-vinyl album of largely ambient and experimental electronic music. Does the campaign of releasing 5 or 6 singles every 4-6 weeks still ring effective with music that is more meditative, instrumental and “album-based”? An emphatic thank you, dude.
Best channel on youtube
A little confused on the timing. So it's still 4 weeks out on sending the music to Spotify editors for their playlists, then 4 weeks after that the release strategy kicks in? (single screen video, lyric video, etc)?
Love this thanks for the inspiration! PS: So many creative ways you can make video content interesting A) official music video, alternative music video, lyric video, and then why not a performance video music video?? that way the song sounds slightly different, still celebrating the release. Video killed the radio star!!!!! videos are the best way to promote.
Jesse, our band has lots of extra tracks that we like, but we don't think are worth putting out as singles, or even as filler tracks on an album. They are more experimental…typical of a B-side from a "alt-rock" band in the 90s when B-sides were still a thing. Anyway, my question is: if we release a single on Spotify with an A & B Side (the A side being the one we pitch to editorial), will this affect our Release Radar, in other words – will we have two tracks vying for our followers Release Radar, rather than the just the main track? (Obviously we want the main track – the single, the A Side to get the attention). So, we were wondering if it is better to just include the B-side on our YouTube, Bandcamp etc, but keep the Spotify singles as just the 1 song without a "B side"?… Or will Spotify just push the pitched track, and B-sides are all right for Spotify/they won't divert attention away from the main single? Thanks.
Great channel btw
Thanks again for the insight Jesse!
Story I heard from the conductor Ben Zander: Two salespeople from a shoe company went to a country in Africa. The first salesperson returned and said "There's no opportunity here, as no one wears shoes.". The second salesperson returned and said "There's a huge opportunity here! No one wears shoes!". That's how I feel about people saying "No one in my genre is doing this!" 🙂
I just want you to know that you said one thing in this video that was a missing link in my personal development. Now I know how to view myself when offering personal story and overall in the broad society. These were literally the words that I need for my world picture to overcome struggles in placing myself in my mind in relation to other people. It's incredible how great things can happen to you even where you absolutely don't expect them. So have my well deserved like, sir 🙂
you should answer more questions! loved this format too
