  1. Hey man, I love your shirt. Could you make a video on the topic on securing sync licenses and mechanical licenses for covers on Youtube and other platforms? Seems that this topic shifts even couple of years. "we are the hits" is something we heard about before that has dried up. Thanks!

  2. Question, what does the phrase “shovel the car out from” mean? You used it in the beginning of the vid. I watched the vid multiple times and I tried using my context clues but i cahnt figure it out 😩😭. pls, what does it mean?

  3. Thank you so much for this, Jesse! This is really insightful

Since you mention how some artists are pretty much known for their covers and struggle when they start releasing originals, I’m wondering if there’s a magic ratio when it comes to covers vs originals. I think it’s one of those things I have to play by ear.

Keep up the awesome content! ☺️

  4. Thank you once again, Jesse! The concept of "Finding an emotion that was present in the original version but wasn’t the dominant emotion in the originators version" is next level!

  5. Covers can be good if you're a singer, but if you're a rapper I would say it's better to get the instrumental of the song or sample of the song and put your own lyrics/twist on it. No one wants to hear a shittier version of Backseat Freestyle.

Another thing- it can also be dangerous to do covers of songs if you do an extreme disservice of it because the fans of the song will literally hate the fuck out of you if you make it sound really corny or "ruin" it. I've seen it happen so many times especially on TikTok and it could ruin momentum a LOT.

  6. Hi, Jesse,
When I buy a license from SounDrop, is it only valid for the platforms they distribute to?

I recently released a (jazz) cover through SounDrop and made a video to it and posted it on YouTube and it says I have a Copyright Claim (that "doesn't affect my account", it says)

  7. It's literally all I see on my reels is people playing a half decent cover song on guitar (usually the solo) and they get 100,000s of views if not millions sometimes, and having a hot body in a bikini helps a lot too.

  8. Another handy tiktok tip, post a cover of the same genre as your release the upload prior to posting an original. That way it massages the algorithm and gives your original a bit of a bump.

  9. Are you talking about Faouzia?

She dropped a video of her torch-y cover of 1999 Europop dance song “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” three years ago.

She included it in some 2021-22 concerts.

3 million views later, it was used on British TV’s Red Rose last year.

Her new version made it to Spotify this month.

  10. I guess it depends on the cover, for we have a cover for "House of the rising sun" which was accepted for playlist consideration? Perhaps because the writer of that song is "anon"?

  11. Great info Jesse!!! I was told you need permission from the original artist to do any kind of music video to a cover version even if you don't change any lyrics… is that correct?

  12. Hey Jesse, I was curious on what's your tip for an effective hook in a tiktok. I have a few content ideas, such as "What if X song was X genre" or just playing the instrument and singing covers but I can't seem to retain viewers long enough. What would you suggest?

    Thanks in advance!

  13. As a rapper, would a remix cover work? Putting remixes has always felt like the cover equivalent, and I've got some views on socials from them, but always figured I couldn't release, but what if I reproduced it? Does new lyrics not count as a cover?

  14. Can you use anyone's instrumental on tiktok without being copyrighted? Like making a different version/mix? I don't need to profit from these things as they aren't technically my work and surve the purpose to promote my brand. I only care if it gets taken down from copyright which I don't know much about on tiktok.

  15. Hey Jesse, I released a song under a old artist name. If I wanted to release the song under new artist name-through distrokid (same distribution as original release) can I do that? Are you familiar with how to do that?
