Let’s pick a domain name | Search Off the Record

A top-level domain (TLD) is the last part of a domain name, after the dot, and identifies the type of organization the domain belongs to, or the country the domain is targeting. Some examples include .com, .org, .ai, .ch, .xyz. In this episode of Search, John, Gary, and Martin help you choose the best top-level domain for you and your website, including price, popularity, and if a custom one makes a difference in search engines. They also touch upon second-level domains, dashes, keywords, their effect on SEO, and more!

  1. So wait, Gary says an expired domain doesn't help. But within a minute later, John says that a domain that you purchase has a bunch of bad links for the past 57 years would take a long time to fix for Google to be okay with it.

First, how are bad links bad for a site now? That infers that negative SEO is possible. What happened to the mindset from Google that bad links aren't bad they just don't help?

Second, if bad links hurt you and it will take months to fix then why wouldn't good links help and give you a months boost? What happened to the mindset that when there's a new registrar, new content, new physical address, etc. that Google sees that the domain changed hands and all SEO resets to zero?

The right questions aren't being asked or answered. The answers are too muddy. If you are going to take the time to do these, be clear. Be direct. Be precise. Be concise.

  2. I was wondering how would Google consider a 60 bucks domain such as .bzh, for instance, used in Brittany (France). Would it localize the search in Brittany or would give any juice coming from Brittany ? Or would it target Breton language websites only (Celtic language from France/Brittany) ? From what I can see, it does not seem as "efficient" (in terms of ranking) as a 15 dollars .fr and does not do much for the language as the language itself is enough to rank on any domains.. (To simplify the question: Do regional domains like .bzh or .eus serve primarily political purposes and are just not really considered by Google apart from local government reasons ?). Thanks for any feedback. (and what about accents such as /é/ or n tilde /ñ/ in domain names ?)

  3. Please make a tiny bit more effort not to make fun of SEOs. I know you often do it, but don't do it in public. It's a bit ugly. There are people of very good human qualities who belong to this sector. Thanks!
