  1. hey jesse. i would like to ask what your take is on taking breaks from producing. at the moment it feels i have backed myself into a corner idea wise – every idea i come up with sounds like trash to my ears. i am aware i am being unfair to myself with this notion yet i do not want to waste my time screwing around. i know that time is the only way to improve and the people that get really good at anything do it even when they hate it. but i have to ask to what point does it become counterproductive and less efficient to square peg/round hole as opposed to taking a few days off of producing and focusing on other things?

  2. Your point about “bells and whistles vs. solid songs” is a great observation. Tbh I don’t listen to much outside the western classical tradition and its more contemporary manifestations, but the pop music (“pop” in the broadest sense, I mean) I am exposed to generally seems to lean pretty heavily on these “bells and whistles.” I tend to feel all this ear candy is being used very intentionally to cover up and distract from the fact that the fundamental compositional elements of the piece just aren’t very strong or emotionally potent.
One can frost a cake with an elaborate design but if the cake itself isn’t baked well or even tastes good, then what’s the point? One can fill a house with beautiful, expensive furniture but if the foundation of the house isn’t properly constructed, then how long until the house itself collapses?

  3. Contemporary Christian Music is guilty of this. They will make the Christian version of a pop artist like Taylor Swift. Things are changing but this trend still persist.

  4. Nice, you cover some good talking points in the video production industry! We enjoy what you talk about, keep going. Anytime you're in Arizona let us know. If you want, message us @dmakproductions on IG and we can connect. You kill it!

  5. Solid advice. But do you ever think about restricting influences to help keep a project from wandering into the wilderness? E.g. I've used a "rule of three" for years where the core vibe of the project is two influences that are closely aligned such as similar bands, and then a third outlier or left field influence like a very different band or film soundtracks or even images etc.

  6. Thanks. Needed to hear this. I can get stuck in the rut of focusing too much on a particular song I’m having trouble with, rather than stepping away and allowing inspiration to come from the unexpected. Lol imma go read some flannery o’conner and listen to sebadoh or something.

  7. Being weird for weirds sake can be great for sketching out ideas. I took an idea that wasn't working recently and just slowed it down and distorted the fuck out of everything and it now sounds way more interesting and like it has more potential. I had no idea what would happen, I just did it because it was a dumb/weird idea.
