A better term for ego depletion is decision fatigue.
What the fuck. This is golden information. I love your channel.
For me learning more music theory has definitely helped improve my song writing. I don't mean using it in a prescriptive sense, more just being able to analyse an idea you have and see all the different options you have to develop it (which could of course mean doing something totally weird). Also taking a concept and using it as a restriction, like my last song were I wanted to write something in 5/8, I find it helps focus things and gives a clear purpose. Anyway thanks for another great vid!
Thanks Jesse! I’d love to see a video covering some details about the best way to start a new band. Clean slate, writing new songs, about to post songs on the web for the first time. Any good strategies?
Totally agree with what you said here Jesse. One thing that's really awesome about streaming services and the DIY musician thing going on nowadays is the encouragement of singles rather than a full album. I've started to try and hammer out a ton of singles recently and it's been WAY more fun and beneficial than focusing all this time and energy on a full album when I didn't even understand how to make good songs or know myself as a musician yet. I think once I have over 10k fans, have an apparent demand for more music from my fans, and understand how to crank out songs in my own way, then I can start considering a full album, otherwise it feels like a waste of time and mental resource.
I feel I'm weakest at comparison. What's the difference between snare sound A and snare B? They both sound good to me! I have very strong opinions about the chords, main melody, and lyrics. But as the process moves along my opinions become less defined. I guess that's where a producer can come in an complement my skills, but that's not really an option for me at the moment.
