It barely is respected though. It's a real challenge to use and be effective. And other engines don't support it. So, you do all this work to implement hreflang, but it only "works" on Google. Also, on page hreflang is more effective, when respected, but much harder to implement than in an XML sitemap. People have moved away from using it because the LOE is very high while the effectiveness is very low.
More clarity on the indexation status for canonicalized hreflang pages in Google Search Console would be more than welcome.
