We have an ecommerce site, and around 1000 product/pages on that site, so how can create unique meta details for those pages?

If I have two articles on my site, one with short tail keyword, say "weight loss". And then written another long tail keyword post " Fastest weight loss tips".
Here short tail pre-existing keyword appears again as focus keyword.
Now when I search in google, "Weight loss", both my articles will appear on search result with normal ranking or google will be confused which one to rank and then penalize both posts?
Please clarify this.
So here is the problem with his answer: Another words only Amazon, ebay, Target, Wal-Mart, and Google can have shopping sites. They all have the same manufacture descriptions on their sites and rank at the top of the search engines. So they have created a monopoly on ecommerce, everyone else that wants to create a shopping site has to spend LOTS and LOTS of hours creating new content to replace the manufactures content if you ever want your site to rank. What a bunch of bull!
here is a good one. punch in cat in google and look at the results. caterpilliar comes up no 1 because its stock symbol is cat. if you were trying to do research about a cat you would be sol. google is not a search engine anymore it is trying to be the all inclusive web site using everyone else's content, dare i say duplicate content. no wonder mr matt is worried about what is good for the web lol. what a hypocrite!
Interesting,
a search engine deciding what is "good for the web". maybe mr. cutts meant to say what is good for google..
waaaooooooooooooooo
nice
Unique and high quality pages are definitely the way to go. Matt's take on focusing on providing value first then thinking abut how many number of pages should be made is so true. That way, we'll end-up seeing more high quality pages rather than hundreds of thousands of pages that looks kinda similar and low quality.

Hi Matt, Does my email campaign help SEO ranking on Google too. Is this one way Google tracks the website plus point?
wasn't that asking the head of the google spam team "how can i spam?"… i guess it was worth the try because any advice would have come from the horses mouth… 🙂
true, definitely agree with that. I also get what Matt is saying though…this guy is basically asking "How can I rank for 1000 products" instead of asking "How can I create quality content for 1000 products".
He might have been harsh in his response but it makes sense.
"You know what really grinds my gears" was a suggested video after this one. lol
We all know the search results are manipulated to drive customers to Adwords
Wisdom kisses Common Sense!!!
Thats really awesome video! Thanks for sharing!
If you have 10 different pages for same products but in different variations (say color, size, make) then you should use canonical link to single page which lists all these variations.
My impression of Matt's answer is that meta descriptions are not that important and the uniqueness and usefulness of the site are much more important than things of such technical details.
Matt, although you may know your topic inside out there are many genuine e commerce sites that need to know the answer to basic questions like this. I think Google has created an atmosphere where it is difficult for website owners to understand what is required, which leaves them at the mercy or private companies who themselves are trying to make a fast buck. Google should create a dialogue direct with e commerce sites and help them understand that is lacking in their site and help them 🙂
Google tracks E-Commerce sites in a number of different ways. The goal for a successful E-Commerce site is to create a blog with high quality post side by side. See if you are selling a SGS3 or iPhone 5 then the product details has to be the same for all sites. That's not content copying. Concentrate on engaging your visitors, site speed and some Adwords Marketing. That's the main thing about E-Commerce. Without adwords marketing you are a needle in a haystack
I feel this is a valid question if you have a eCommerce site with many similar products. The content will be quite similar by default. The question wasn't how do I make 1000 pages, it was how do I make my 1000 pages unique.
It was more a content question.
No touching on meta descriptions, markup, titles etc
I never dislike his vids, but this one went way off track. For similar items like say a Red fountain pen and a red and black fountain pen, meta descriptions will be very similar and indeed mixed – especially say if you search with "fountain pen".
You did a research on that? Kudos 😀
If you ever tried coding an e-commerce site you would have known the pain 😛
Peace
Even if he went off track a little bit, I think he gave clarity on the larger issue here. I don't often feel satisfied after watching GWH videos because, but I think the tough love approach was certainly what was needed here.
Matt is slightly dodging the question. If you have 1,000 distinct products, of course it is possible to create to create 1,000 unique quality pages. It's only difficult because the asker is thinking in terms of HTML or a WordPress plugin or some automated formula that will do it for free.
Two possibilities are:
* hire someone to write 1,000 pages of unique quality relevant content.
* motivate users to write high quality reviews/feedback (maybe unrealistic, depending on the product.)
I think Matt went a little off track in his response.
As for the question, the answer entirely depends on what method you are using to run your ecommerce site. If there are a 1000 different products, then each of those products would be unique and have at least one element of uniqueness in their description (even if it's just the SKU)
I think he takes his glasses off, because the question comes from India. As everybody knows, indians in general only make SPAMS and not have a good SEO. I get angry with that too.
All they know to do is Link building ( Black link building). Google doesn't like that.
And this question was too primary.
Yes it make me glad that I don't have to think of a way of making an e-commerce site unique. What can you do the Amazon has not already done……..tough..
It doesn't matter how, because there is no good SEO. You tell bullshit how to do this and that and it all leads to penalty and buing AdWords. Stop telling bullshit with happy face, because your master hates SEO and will destroy every single website just to get AdWords money !
Matt, I am a fan, however for this one, the direction I would have taken would have been more about what you can do. For a product based site, I'd look at documenting application stories about each product, or add your personal comment. Once added personal/human content & then have the meta tags reflect those new attributes. Creating quality content that adds value to the site will take a lot of hard work. Though if you were able to do products per day, you would complete the job in 100 days!
I see what you're saying but I don't think there's anything wrong with having an ECommerce site listing 1,000 distinct SKU pages, regardless of his business having some uber USP. Maybe he was just looking for tips on generating unique, non-robotic titles, descriptions, body copy etc…?
LOL, tough love. We all need it every once in awhile. 😉
To the person who asked that question. What you can do to make each page unique is to create not only a description for each product but you can also add images of the product showing different angles, for example.
You can include user comments/testimonials in a WordPress comments format, for example.
Add a video or two describing or showing how the product can be used.
There are lots of things you can do. Start with the products you want to push the most.
first time I see Matt took off his glasses! lol Great speech!
Question is: if ecommerce site sells 1000s of non-unique things, say spare parts for mobile phones with the same tech data as everybody on net, how to make it unique as a description de facto can't be unique or original – it can be JUST technically correct one: 115x61x11.6mm…
Actually, he read it correctly, but he read between the lines. If someone's asking how to create "unique meta details" for a page, chances are pretty good that the rest of the content doesn't differentiate itself very much either. It should be easy enough to generate unique "meta details" for 1,000 different products, assuming the people involved with the site actually took the time to write something compelling about each product. This should be happening regardless of Google's opinion.
Ambiguous as ever. Also why does about.com and livestrong rank for everything if this is true?
Hi Matt, you tweeted that you shot 80 WebmasterHelp videos in a day. All your previous videos were good. This shows that yes you did have a long day. Was this your last video of that day?
As usual the devil is in the detail… read between the lines, and Matt has given you your answer.
Unique / dynamic titles, meta descriptions, product descriptions, images (with dynamic keyword rich alt text), videos, UGC (reviews), microdata.
I will gladly pay Matt Cutts ANY amount of money (seriously) to answer a question I have been trying to get him to answer all year, which is "How should webmasters create a website for a local business that services several small surrounding towns within a 30 mile radius. I am already aware of the create great content pitch you guys always say. Create special "landing" pages for each city geared to that keyword? Example: tires rochester, tires greece, tires spencerport etc or 1 landing page?"
I also have never seen Matt taken off his glasses, though his answer is also insightful.
Wow the first Matt Cutts Face Palm!
uninspired a tired man.
