Does the size of a website affect its authority in Google?

Brian Hancock from Long Island, NY asks:

“How much does the size of a web site (# indexed pages/content) have an effect on its authority in Google’s eyes?”

  1. Giday Great information… Have a question…"what is the best size format to build a site to??? Is it 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 800… what is the preferred size out there…
Better still what size would you use??

Any info is welcome, thank you.

  2. I've seen minisites with about 10-20 pages rank very highly for the search term I used. The pages were well thought out and very useful to me and I wouldnt be surprised if other sites linked to this mini site.

If that same site had a million pages of auto generated crap I would be less likely to find it useful and trust the information there.

  3. The recipe that I find most effective is:

    1) W3C Validated Code.
    2) Update Your Website Regularly (More often than you see Google updating your index.)
    3) Anchor Text internally and externally that is relevant to your pages.
    4) Title & H1 tags relevant to page.
    5) Keywords & Description meta tags relevant to page.
    6) Directories, image alts, and file names associated with your keywords.
    7) Anchor Text, Bullet Lists, Bold/Italicized/Underlined Text help Spiders know what is important.

  4. I'm thinking what may happen is that Google rates sites with lots of pages that have an incoming link higher than a site that has lots of incoming links to one page – could that be the correlation between large sites and higher rank?

  5. Matt is usually so clear but he didn't answer the question in this video very well.

It's still unclear whether a fully crawled website with plenty of banklinks to the homepage will overall have more authority over that of a similar website with fewer pages.

  6. Thanks for answering the question Matt! I wish I would have been a little more specific in my question now because I'm more curious if it's a ranking factor at all.

I know the word authority is often synonymous with links/PageRank but there is usually always a correlation between high ranking sites and large sites. It would make sense that Google would want to send visitors to good resources and clearly a 100 page site is going to provide more information than a 1 page site. Is it a factor?
