Swapfiets’ subscription business model has managed a near-miraculous transformation for the future of urban transportation.
This year, Swapfiets has reached the milestone of 100,000 customers, becoming the largest bicycle subscription in the world. From renting a handful of bikes 2014 until today, the company has grown by at least 500% every year.
Their reason behind their rapid growth?
It’s a mix between a subscription model business and the promise of a high-quality and always functioning bicycle for a fixed amount per month.
But why did they use a subscription business model?
Subscription model businesses are emerging everywhere. Companies such as Goodiebox, HelloFresh and Amazon Prime employ a subscription business.
Instead of just selling bikes, Swapfiets created a new category, and it was a first in the market.
