Does anchor text carry through 301 redirects?

On February 26, 2009, Google software engineer Matt Cutts collected questions on Google Moderator and answered many of them on video.

Mharris from New York asked: Does anchor text carry through all 301 redirects? Will there be a penalty for sites that do this as their sole way of link building?

  1. I have a question Matt:

What if I have site (A), which is a PR2, then I move it to site (B), which is a PR0? If I set up a 301 redirect back to site (A), will this hurt my overall link value of the domain, or will I still get the value of site (A)?

  2. On this note – what if the 301's make for a better user expierence?

    For example:

I run a site with about 17,000 "company profiles". Of those 17,000 we've found about 500 or so websites that are dropped or dead for one reason or another. We've debated picking them up and then redirecting them to the companies profile page on our site. Would this cause a problem with that many redirects? It's better for the user, but I would like to know if Googlebot is smart enough to understand that.
