In the absence of a professional cameraman, Mike and Marketing Manager Jennifer Ballard get creative (and low tech) to help record their planning session for the show. They start by defining the end goal – to sell 7000 physical tickets to the conference – and reflect on past experience to acknowledge roadblocks and anticipate complications the team will need to overcome. They consider issues such as email deliverability, a mismatch of messaging, and the reality that Mike’s secret project may dominate his time and availability.

As a timeline is established and new marketing opportunities are outlined Mike says he’s willing to invest whatever it takes to make sure that sales get as close to 7000 tickets as possible, but expresses he’s concerned his team might not be able to accommodate the growth that’s coming their way.

At the same time, Mike is working on his secret project. He calls Mitch Dong with a phrase that’s familiar to many Social Media Examiner staff, “I have a crazy idea!” Watch as Mike searches for direction and begins to wrestle with the realities and fears of beginning Project Genesis.

  1. Ways to keep your marketing team focused for the journey ahead:
    1. Get them to write ONE thing on their to do list for the day. (No, seriously). When they are finished their ONE THING they can work on number TWO. Multi-tasking is a pitfall.
    2. Every evening before your task leave for the following day, get them to plan their following day.
    3. Pay for an Airtasker to run errands for the staff on their lunch hours. So they can actually get the breaks they need. Instead of running around shopping, buying gifts, or filling out admin forms, all the stuff we have to do that keeps us unproductive.
    4. Put all your review activities in ONE PLACE so when you are reviewing stuff it's all in the one document so you can review it quickly.
    5. Batch, batch, batch.
    6. Regular movement breaks for your staff.
    7. Get your staff to set timers and work in 40 minute time blocks.
    8. Have an office where staff can go for a "nap" – seriously, productivity will improve.

SOOOOOOO Excited that Season 2 of the Journey is now out. Woot woot.

  2. Glad to see The Journey is back. One thing we have been using in our marketing group to stay focused is Fifteen Five. We list what we are going to focus on at end of each report, then get a check in mid-week, and submit a final on Friday. The boss tosses in some optional questions here and there, but it is designed to keep us on task. He comments on the report so it helps with communication in between our 1 on 1’s.

  3. Damn I was starting to wonder where the show went (0=
I like how you've set a 7x target from your previous conference
    go BIG!~

If I had a team as big as yours, I wouldn't really want the departments to work in their own tiny worlds
invest some time in interdepartmental brainstorming because hey, this isn't rocket science, a brilliant idea could come from the finance team (0=

  4. Love to see the Journey is back! So excited to follow along to the next conference! It’s so great to know where you are now that I have been in the space and your plans for expanding. It will be one year that my journey has also begun right after the conference! Love everything your group does. You have an amazing team!
