French Journal Day 105 (Travel Diary Day 185)
While visiting Jess’ home is always a difficult experience, it can also be a comical affair. It’s probably not good form to make light of the challenging situation the patients (I’m not sure what the correct term is here) face but it helps to keep us sane when we’re there.
We’ve slowly gotten to know some of the characters at the care facility, most of whom have no idea where they are.
There’s a wee little gentleman who stands by the front door and greets us with a great big smile as we enter.
On Jess’ floor most of the patients seem to be Alzheimer sufferers. I find it interesting to watch how they interact with each other.
To my surprise, Jess spoke a tiny amount of French today. When an elderly man smiled at her she said ‘Bonjour madam!’
While we were sitting in the main room, another fella was wandering around seemingly looking for something. He approached us and started mumbling in French. Jess declared ‘Well aren’t you handsome! Come and sit on my lap’. The man continued his search elsewhere.
When a lady who perpetually sobs made her way to us asking for help, Jess whispered out the corner of her mouth ‘This one’s a bore. Let’s get rid of her.’ She’s feisty for a 98 year-old!
Every visit brings with it something different, something unusual.
